Situated on the lofty slopes of the Western Ghats, Illickal Kallu is a majestic monolith that attracts visitors with its inimitable beauty. This spectacular pillar of rock stands on top of the Illickal Mala and is part of a massive rock formation made up of two other hills. Exposed to the vagaries of weather year after year, each of these hills has attained peculiar shapes prompting the names ‘Kuda Kallu’ (umbrella-shaped rock) and ‘Koonan Kallu’ (hunchback rock). Even though a large portion of its peak was shorn off, the weather-beaten Illickal Kallu stands tall and undefeated in its intimidating beauty.
The short jeep drive from the base to the top through the winding road is a thrilling adventure. If you are up to it, you can also opt for a hike up this path. The viewpoint offers a panoramic view of the deep valleys and the mist-covered hills. The sprawling green carpet threaded with the silver tributaries of the Meenachil River and the towering peaks playing hide and seek with the wispy clouds will make you feel like you are in a dream world.
Legend goes that, the small pond on top of the unscalable ‘Kuda Kallu’ has the mythical ‘Neela Koduveli’ (a rare medicinal plant) growing in it. The plant is believed to have the power to bring good luck to all those who come across it. If the myth is true or not, one might never know. But as you descend the hill, you will surely feel lucky to have spent a day in the serene lap of nature.
