You can access the cave through a series of stairs cut into the rocks. According to legends, the royal family of Madurai camped here with their retinue on their way to Poonjar. 'Kotta' means 'fort' and 'Thavalam' means 'resting place'. So, the name itself suggests that this must have been a halting place for a travelling party.
Within the cave, you can see the rocks carved into the shapes of chairs and couches. Sculptures of Madurai Meenakshi, Lord Ayyappa, Lord Muruga and Kannaki, the legendary central character of the Tamil epic 'Silapathikaram', also embellish the walls of the cave. Models of various weapons, believed to have been used in the old days, hewn into the rock surface offer valuable glimpses into the weaponry of the past.
Surrounded by hills on three sides, the view from Kottathavalam is spectacular. The secluded nature of the place is perfect for spending a relaxing day with your loved ones. Enjoy the beauty of the flourishing landscape while you ponder the footsteps and hoof beats that might have marked the hills in a bygone era.
