Poonjar Palace, situated on the Pala-Erattupetta route, is a magnificent symbol of the regal splendour of a foregone era. Estimated to have been constructed 600 years ago, this time-honoured edifice was the seat of the ancient Poonjar Kingdom.
Descended from the Pandya Kings of the Sangam Age, the Poonjar Dynasty founded by Manavikrama Kulasekara Perumal was one of the prominent kingdoms in the Central Travancore region. Primarily made out of wood, the temple-style traditional architecture also has several features that point to the Chera and Pandya roots of the Poonjar Dynasty. An incredible replica of Madurai Meenakshi Temple, the tutelary deity of the Pandya Kings, is located on the palace premises. The walls of this temple are adorned with sculptures that narrate war fare stories from the Puranas.
The museum that currently operates in the Poonjar Palace has an exceptional collection of antiques and exquisitely crafted furniture. Bronze lamps, massive chandeliers, jewel boxes, sculptures of Nataraja (statue of Lord Shiva in dancing form), a Droni (Ayurvedic treatment bed) carved out of a single piece of wood, thaliyolas (palm leaf engravings), a variety of lamps, grain measures, a palanquin and an assortment of weapons are some of the treasures from the past that are carefully preserved here. In addition to being a favoured destination of art and history aficionados, Poonjar Palace also provides the casual visitor an opportunity to understand the rich cultural history of Kerala.
