Believed to have been built almost 1000 years ago, the church is of great archaeological significance. After decoding the inscriptions on the stone tablets discovered here, Archeologists have concluded that these were memorial stones set up on the tombs in AD 910 and AD 920.
The church underwent several renovations before it achieved its present form. The architecture of the church is reminiscent of the Orvieto Cathedral in Italy. The stone cross positioned in front of the shrine is believed to be as old as the church itself. One of the holiest relics among the Malankara churches, the Holy Soonoro - a small piece of Mother Mary's belt - is also housed here. St. Mary's Church has several educational institutions, a hospital and various spiritual organisations under its management.
'Feast of the Virgin Mary's Birth' celebrated for eight days, is the biggest annual event of the church. Known as 'Ettunompu' (8-Day Lent), it is conducted from September 1st - September 8 every year. Hundreds and thousands of devotees throng the church seeking the blessings of St. Mary and offering their gratitude for the favours received.
