Declared a protected monument, the Masjid is located in one of the Heritage Zones of Kerala. According to historians and architectural experts, the mosque is more than a thousand years old and is one of the oldest mosques in India.
Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid is renowned for its spectacular architecture. Made mostly out of wood, the design of the building is unique since it doesn't have any domes or minarets. Built-in accordance with 'Thachu Shastra' (Science of Carpentry), the mosque is one of the finest examples of Kerala's traditional architecture. The intricate wood carvings on the windows, the ornate painting on the 'mugappu', the flower motifs engraved on the roof and the timber staircase leading to the upper floor are excellent examples of the expert craftsmanship behind the building of this Masjid. Quran verses in Arabic are carved on the wooden wall between the 'Puram Palli' (Outer Mosque) and the 'Akam Palli' (Inner Mosque).
The massive stone tank cut out of a single stone, was utilized for washing hands and feet before entering the mosque. Thazhathangadi Juma Masjid awes you with its sheer history. The 'Nizhal Khadikaram' (Shadow Clock) used in the past to measure time, stands silent in the courtyard, a witness to the years that passed by.
