Believed to have been built in the 16th century by the erstwhile Raja of Thekkumkoor, Thirunakkara Mahadevar Temple occupies a prominent place among the 108 shivalayas of Kerala. Spread over 4 acres of land rich with trees and plants, the temple creates a tranquil oasis among the hustle and bustle of Kottayam town.
Venerated as 'Thirunakkara Thevar', the royal family of Thekkumkoor considered the presiding deity as their 'paradevatha' (tutelary deity). Since the Raja was an ardent devotee of Lord Vadakkumnathan, the temple in Kottayam bears a close resemblance to the Vadakkumnathan Temple in Thrissur. Thirunakkara Temple's design is the epitome of traditional Kerala architecture. The 'Koothambalam' (temple theatre) here is one of the biggest in Kerala. The vibrant murals that adorn the inner walls of the temple will grab your attention with their intricate beauty. The sanctum sanctorum is decorated with magnificent images from Hindu mythology. A number of shrines dedicated to various sub-deities like Lord Subrahmanya, Lord Ganesha and Lord Ayyappa are also located in the temple.
The annual ten-day festival known as 'Arattu Utsavam', is held in mid-March and is renowned both for its splendour and cultural significance. The entirety of Kottayam town transforms itself into a festival city to welcome the sea of people that streams here to be a part of the grand celebrations.
