The Vavarpalli situated here is a sacred space for both Hindus and Muslims. During the Sabarimala pilgrimage season, the Vavar Juma Masjid becomes one of the central points where Ayyappa devotees converge to pay obeisance before they continue their journey.
The mosque is dedicated to Vavar, the renowned Muslim companion of Lord Ayyappa. The legends surrounding Vavar are numerous. In different versions of the story, he becomes an Arab pirate, a Muslim saint, a foreigner from Syria or someone who belonged to the Pandya kingdom. Whoever Vavar might be, one thing that is uncontested is his friendship with Lord Ayyappa.
Two Ayyappa temples are situated next to the Vavar Juma Masjid. The 'Chandanakudam' festival and 'Pettathullal' are two important events that take place at Erumely during the 'Mandala Kalam' and the 'Makaravilakku' season (mid-December - mid-January). 'Pettathullal', a ritualistic spiritual dance, is performed in front of the Vavar Mosque to commemorate Lord Ayyappa's victory over the demon Mahishi. 'Chandanakudam' festival, conducted on the eve of 'Pettathullal', is marked by a grand procession attended by thousands of people. The Vavar Masjid is not just a symbol of communal amity but it stands as a token of true friendship.
